The Crate Side Table belongs to the Crate Collection, designed in 1934 by Dutch architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld to make use of surplus wooden shipping crates, and relaunched in a Rietveld Originals x HAY collaboration.
Made with respect for the original, it shares the collection’s precisely balanced proportions and transparent construction, with a square top and an extra storage shelf. It is crafted in solid pine with a water-based lacquer for outdoor use, applied in three layers: a primer and two topcoats.
Suited to terraces, gardens and a wealth of outdoor settings. HAY recommends using Crate outdoors only, as the wood is dried for outdoor conditions. Studio Office supplies the Crate Side Table in Cyprus; the finish is specified at the time of order.

Wipe with a clean cloth wrung in water or in a solution of water and a neutral detergent, then remove soap residue with a clean, dry cloth. Do not use detergents containing silicone, soft soap, solvents, alcohol-based cleaners or scouring pads. Wash the table regularly, wipe it dry after rain, and remove stains, sun cream and bird droppings quickly; use coasters under damp, hot or coloured objects. The colour changes slowly with sun and weather. Above 35°C resin may bleed from the pine; let it dry, then brush it off. Check the screws and tighten them after a few weeks of use, and store in a cool, ventilated place in winter.
